Another unique attribute of this house is the fact that the master bedroom is on the first floor. In the society column of the weekly Madisonian, it tells of Mrs. L.H. Foster returning from a week’s medical treatment in Atlanta in October of 1883, right before the house was completed. It could be that Mrs. Foster’s feebleness made it more practical to put the bedroom on the ground floor next to the kitchen. However, a design almost exactly to the floor plan of this house in Victorian Cottage Residences (1873) suggests internal convenience as the motive for this unusual arrangement.
The Master Bedroom has its own private porch with no exterior access - the only access being through the walk-through windows in the bedroom. It also features two built-in closets with dovetailed 12” wide solid heart pine drawers.
Additionally, the ebonized mantle (over mahogany) features a carved sunflower motif. Ebonizing was the most costly finish for furniture in the 19th century.
