The City of Madison, Georgia

Madison, Georgia is a beautiful historic city located approximately one hour (65 miles) east of Atlanta.  Long known as “the town Sherman refused to burn” and host to house tours as early as the 1940’s, Madison is described by an Atlanta Magazine survey of the six most well known small towns in Georgia as “by our reckoning, antebellum Madison scored highest on old-time ambiance” and in 2004 was named the #1 Small Town in the United States by Travel and Leisure Magazine.  It was established in 1809 as the hub of planters’ town homes for a sixty mile radius and has one of the largest designated historic districts in Georgia.

There are several attractions and museums in Madison, including but not limited to: Heritage Hall, the nationally recognized Madison-Morgan Cultural Center, the Madison Museum of Fine Art, and the Morgan County African-American Museum.  Madison also abounds in parks, as well as places to eat and shop.

The city of Madison is part of Morgan County, which is home to Georgia’s largest state park, Hard Labor Creek State Park, and part of Lake Oconee, a 19,000 acre reservoir.  Together they provide some of the state’s best fishing, water skiing, swimming, boating, camping, hiking, golf, and tennis.
